Although the Massachusetts Department of Education mandates that,
beginning in 2003, students are required to pass the 10th Grade English
Language Arts and Mathematics tests as a requirement for high school
graduation*, testing occurs across many grade levels. This is done to track
student progress over time, allowing ongoing identification of those knowledge
domains or strands, if any, in which students require concentrated study
efforts. In addition, because its focus is to promote learning, the MCAS
Program has been expanded to include testing for the Science & Technology and
History & Social Science knowledge domains. The administration schedule by
grade level for Spring 2003 follows:
