Two types of questions, Open Response and Multiple Choice, appear after each reading selection.

Open Response questions require the student to compose a multi-sentence answer describing an issue discussed or explaining an inference that might be culled from the text. Answers are evaluated on a 0 to 4 point scale based on the degrees to which the response reflects relevant information contained within the reading selection and makes appropriate contextual use of this information.

There are four different types or categories of Multiple Choice questions employed:

bullet

Word Meaning Questions. These test vocabulary by focusing in on an uncommon word in the reading selection and asking which of four alternative words or phrases most closely matches the meaning of the word in the context in which it is used.

bullet

Supporting Idea Questions. These test the ability to focus on a small or unimportant fact stated directly within the reading selection and then identify the alternative that matches the fact presented.

bullet

Thematic Summary Questions. These test the ability to identify the main idea or central theme represented by the reading passage.

bullet

Generalization Questions. These test the ability to use information in the text to draw conclusions. Unlike the Supporting Idea Questions, the answer will not be directly stated in the text; rather, the task is to infer something that is unstated but logically follows from the information presented.
